Species

Albizia saman (Jacq.) Merr. [Fabaceae]

Synonyms

Samanea saman (Jacq.) F. Muell., Calliandra saman (Jacq.) Griseb., Enterolobium saman (Jacq.) Prain, Feuilleea saman (Jacq.) Kuntze, Inga saman (Jacq.) Willd., Zygia saman (Jacq.) Lyons

Description

Lofty canopied tree with a large symmetrical crown. An advantageous shade tree as the fernlike leaflets close up at night, permitting rain to fall through to the grass beneath.

Potential constraints

Rich in tannins.

Ruminants

The long black pods and the leaves relished for fodder.Withstands lopping and can be maintained at any desired height by judicious pruning. The foliage esteemed as livestock fodder.
