In a field trial in 1979-81, Gir-Guzera steers (133 kg initial liveweight) were grazed on (a) P. maximum with Macroptilium atropurpureum and Centrosema pubescens or (b) H. rufa both of which were given 0 or 60 kg N/ha. Higher liveweight gain/day and gain/ha and carrying capacity were shown by (a) than by (b), mainly in the absence of N; (a) was also superior in CP content, DM digestibility and intake. N application increased daily liveweight gain and CP content for (b). Annual liveweight gains for (a) and (b) were 224 and 183 kg and 381 and 248 kg/ha without and with N, resp.
